Well, it's like this. Sonic pays the bills around here. And this isn't just about tater tots. It's about all the things going on at our Sonic Drive Ins!
My husband Britt and I own/operate 7 Sonic Drive In in Northeast Alabama. We love it!
Here's our backstory:
Britt's dad, became a Sonic franchisee back in the 70s in Monticello, Mississippi. Back then, it was an easy and inexpensive chain restaurant to buy into. Britt's uncle was also in the Sonic business in Oxford, Mississippi. Life happened, things changed. Ronnie got out of the Sonic business all together, moved to Alabama and starting a roofing company.
Years past.
In 1996, Britt was 23. His dad decided to get back into the restaurant business. So he built an independent drive in restaurant called "Hoppers" in Alexandria, AL. During the same time, Sonic began to reposition its brand. Sonic restaurants began to pop up everywhere! Business at Hoppers was good, but not great. So, Britt and Ronnie flew to Oklahoma City and became Sonic franchisees! They converted their Hoppers into a Sonic Drive In and began building a second restaurant.
By the Spring of 1998 they were wrapping up construction on the Sonic in Attalla, AL.
And I was 18 years old.
I drove past the construction site on my way home from school everyday. Finally one day, I saw the "Now Hiring" sign. I had never really thought about applying for a job there. It was almost summer. I had worked at my dad's office the summer prior. Working 9-5 every day, 5 days a week is no teenager's idea of fun!!
On whim one day [or by GOD's provident design] I pulled in to get an application.
Now, I was the girl who said I would NEVER work at a fast food restaurant. I am now ashamed to admit it, but my teenage self always thought that kind of work was beneath me. Does GOD have a sense of humor or what??
I went in to get the application. There was this incredibly good looking guy sitting on the desk, putting his chair together. Turns out he was part owner in that Sonic and he was going to manage it. I was DEFINITELY going to work there!!! Ha!
My mom disapproved of my getting a job. She said I was too busy, in a way she was right. But did I mention the manager was cute?
We opened in early May. Britt and I started dating at the end of June. He told me that he was going to build another Sonic in Jacksonville, AL and he would be leaving our store. We kept dating. I quit in August. We were engaged on September 24, 1998. We planned a wedding for June, but we eloped on New Years Day instead!
Fast forward 10 years. We know have 7 Sonic Drive Ins and 2 children. I supervise all Local Store Marketing and HR and most everything except Operations. My husband directs all operations. He also manages our Jacksonville location.
We love our Sonic Drive Ins!!
I want to use this blog to share information about our 7 stores. This blog is not written, managed or have anything to do with Sonic Industries.
We are franchisees of SDI. That's it. That's all. I do not make any claims that the specials, deals, etc. will be available at your local drive-in. This information is for our 7 Sonics only!
